Rain Barrels

As part of its larger efforts related to managing stormwater in the Village and to encourage sustainable actions, the Village offers a rain barrel program for residents. Under this program, residents can purchase up to two 55-gallon barrels at a price of $25 each (a greatly reduced priced from the typical retail cost of $100). This page discusses the program and how residents can participate.

Why to Purchase a Barrel

Rain barrels collect rain runoff from a roof and hold it until it can be used for watering plants or a lawn. This eco-friendly solution can help you conserve water (and reduce your water bill) and helps reduce the amount of excess stormwater that can contribute to localized flooding.

Purchasing a Barrel

Barrels can be purchased directly at Village Hall at the front reception desk. The Village can accept cash or credit card. Please be sure to have the means to transport the barrel home, as the Village does not deliver barrels.

Setting Up the Barrel

Once you bring the rain barrel home, all you need to do is connect it to your downspout. Be sure to have the water drain through the screen lid, as this helps keeps debris (like leaves) from entering the barrel and deters mosquitoes from breeding.

Because all barrels are equipped with a spigot at the bottom, you have several options on how to water your plants - a garden hose, landscape tubing or drip tubing can be attached to the barrel. If you want to use a watering can, simply situate the barrel on a wooden pedestal to access the spigot. The barrels also have an overflow fitting to allow excess water to be diverted away from the barrel and a linking hose fitting, so two or more barrels can be joined together and will all fill up from just one downspout!

Tips & Tricks

Below are some tips and tricks for using a barrel:
  • If you won't be using the barrel for an extended period of time, drain it and place it indoors.
  • Important: Be sure to drain and store the barrel over the winter. If any water is left in it and it freezes, the barrel could crack.
  • To prevent odors and the potential for the barrel to be used as a mosquito breeding ground, try to use any collected rain water within a week or so of collecting it.
