Boards and Commissions
Village Board of Trustees
The Village Board of Trustees establishes policy and hires the Village Manager to implement the policies and direct day-to-day operations. Since May 1, 2008 Richard Nahrstadt has been the Village Manager. The Board is assisted by a variety of advisory boards and commissions to which resident volunteers are appointed. Each board or commission has a special area of expertise and responsibility.
Alarm Commission
The Alarm Commission has been disbanded; however, members of this commission may be called upon in the future on an “as needed” basis to act as resident consultants to the Village Board and staff on issues that pertain to their previous commission duties.
Animal Control Commission
The Animal Control Commission has been disbanded; however, members of this commission may be called upon in the future on an “as needed” basis to act as resident consultants to the Village Board and staff on issues that pertain to their previous commission duties.
Architectural Control Commission
Reviews architectural design of buildings in new subdivisions to prevent monotony of similar exteriors; assists administrators in matters pertaining to architectural design.
Arts Commission
Acts in an advisory capacity to the board of trustees to encourage the development and enjoyment of the arts in the village. The arts are to include the exhibition of works of art, the conduct of programs of music and the performing arts, exhibition of historical objects, presentation of dramatic productions and other exhibitions and performances enhancing the cultural and intellectual level of the village.
Bicycle Task Force
The Bicycle Task Force guides, supports, and advises the Village of Northbrook on bicycle and pedestrian issues.
Community Relations Commission
Members plus representatives of religious organizations and one representative of the park district, library and each school district) - plans and promotes events to encourage understanding and appreciation of diverse racial, religious and ethnic groups; hears complaints of violation of the Fair Housing Ordinance.

Economic Development Committee
Electrical Commission
Periodically reviews codes, regulations and fees applicable to this construction trade.
Emergency Telephone Systems Board
Is appointed to govern the Enhanced 911 Fund and manage the 911 emergency telephone system in accordance with state statutes and the referendum approved by the voters in 1988.
Environmental Quality Commission
Concerned with programs and policies for protection of our total environment; sponsors annual Earth Day events.
Firefighters' Pension Fund Board
Administers the disability and retirement plan for local Fire Department personnel per State Statutes.
Industrial and Commercial Development Commission (ICDC)
Makes recommendations to Board on matters related to the improvement of economic growth for both existing and new businesses; works to establish appropriate goals and objectives related to sound business practices, increased tax base and employment opportunities.
Plan Commission
Conducts public hearings and reviews all requests for rezoning or subdivision of land in the Village; for every land development petition, the Plan Commission recommends approval, denial or modification to the Board of Trustees; provides a continuing review of Village ordinances and regulations related to land use, control and development.
Board of Fire / Police Commissioners
Safety Commission
The Safety Commission has been disbanded; however, members of this commission may be called upon in the future on an “as needed” basis to act as resident consultants to the Village Board and staff on issues that pertain to their previous commission duties.
Senior Services Commission
Monitors the operation of Village-owned senior citizen housing; recommends management personnel, reviews the budget, and recommends programs to benefit senior citizen residents.
Stormwater Management Commission
Responsible for implementation and modification of Village’s Stormwater Management Plan; determines effectiveness of Village efforts after significant storms and recommends alternative responses.
Telecommunications Commission
The Telecommunications Commission has been disbanded; however, members of this commission may be called upon in the future on an “as needed” basis to act as resident consultants to the Village Board and staff on issues that pertain to their previous commission duties.
Transportation Advisory Committee
Youth Commission
Suggests and aids in development of programs for youth involvement in the community.
Zoning Board of Appeals
Publicly hears and decides all requests for variation from yard, fence and other requirements of the Zoning Code.
