Fire Department

The Northbrook Fire Department is a full service emergency agency, certified by Cook County and the State of Illinois as the Emergency Management Agency for the Village. In May 2009, the Department was re-evaluated by the Insurance Services Office, Inc. (ISO) and successfully maintained its “Class 2” Rating for both the Village and the Northbrook Rural Fire Protection District. The ISO program recognizes the efforts of communities to provide superior fire-protection services for citizens and property owners. This ranks Northbrook in the top 2.50% of Fire Departments in Illinois.
Since August of 1996, the Fire Department has been deployed in a three-station plan: 740 Dundee Road (headquarters), 1840 Shermer Road and 650 Huehl Road. All fire stations are staffed with full time career firefighter/paramedics.
During multiple calls or large incidents, our staffing is supplemented by 18 fully certified Paid-On-Call (POC) or part-time firefighters. Northbrook Fire Department is a participating agency in a progressive mutual aid program, which shares resources for large fires, hazardous materials incidents, special rescue and underwater rescue. Closest station response by other communities to Northbrook also means the best of service at no additional cost. Northbrook is the host community for the Regional Emergency Dispatch (RED) Center. RED Center is one of the premier dispatch centers in the state and is staffed by certified Emergency Medical Dispatchers (EMD).
Eighty-five percent of the time, the fire department arrives on the scene of an alarm in six minutes or less, from the time of dispatch to first unit on the scene. Generally, emergency service levels have remained stable and were achieved at acceptable levels. In Fiscal Year 08/09, the total emergency call load was 5,650. The department responded to 1,243 Fire Calls, 2,923 EMS Calls, 59 Rescues, and 1,425 Non-Emergency Service Calls.
In FY 08/09, we revised our Community Emergency Operations Plan, becoming one of only 40 communities (of close to 129) to be certified by the Cook County Emergency Management Agency.
