Streets and Sidewalks

The street inventory contains approximately 112 centerline miles or roughly 1.8 million square yards of pavement. Annually, a windshield survey of the condition of each street is undertaken by the Engineering and Public Works Departments.

Repairs, maintenance, resurfacing and rehabilitation of the Village's street system requires an on-going management program to identify and prevent premature failure of the pavement base and surface, and to correct problems on a timely basis as they occur.

Street Sweeping

Public Works strives to continuously maintain clean streets by having at least one sweeper in daily operation year round, weather permitting.

Sidewalks

Sidewalk programs include:

  • a 50/50 cost sharing replacement program for replacement of deficient public sidewalks;

  • replacement of deteriorated public sidewalk immediately adjacent to municipal utility structures;

  • replacement of deteriorated public side yard or rear yard sidewalks that are separated from a subdivision by a barrier, fence or berm;

  • installation of depressed ramp corners to facilitate bicycles, carriages, and ADA handicapped accessibility;

  • a "Gap" program to install sidewalks within 1/2 mile of schools;

Please watch for the April issue of your Northbrook Newsletter for information pertaining to the Cost Sharing Sidewalk Replacement Program.

Snow and Ice Control (Snow Plowing)

Snow and ice removal from Village streets is one of the most visible/vital functions performed by the Department, and is subject to the most variables. We strive to be expeditious and efficient in the removal of snow and ice from Village streets, municipal buildings and commuter parking lots. Various control procedures have been established to ensure effective service is provided to arterial, neighborhood collector, and residential streets. For more information see our Snow and Ice Control Policies brochure.
