Northbrook Gives Green Light: CFL, Battery, Electronics Drop-Offs
As Northbrook continues to implement programs promoting environmental awareness, the Village will offer electronics drop-off opportunities along with compact fluorescent light bulb (CFL) and household battery drop-off bins.
Electronics Recycling:
*      Beginning July 1, there will be a drop-off opportunity for electronics on the first Tuesday of every month, including July 1.
*      The drop-off area will be located at the fleet maintenance garage behind the Village Hall, 1227 Cedar Lane, from 8:00am - 3:00pm.
*      CFLs and household batteries will also be accepted at this location on the first Tuesday of every month.
*      This service is exclusively for Northbrook residents (no drop-offs from nonresidential sources)
*      There will be a no charge for residents.
*      The material cannot be comingled with other materials such as solid waste, hazardous waste, landscape waste or other recyclable materials not intended for this collection.
CFL & Household Battery Recycling:
*      Begins July 1.
*      Drop-off bins will be located in the front lobby of the Northbrook Village Hall, 1225 Cedar Lane, 8:30am - 4:30pm (business hours), Monday through Friday.
*      The Northbrook Public Library, at 1201 Cedar Lane, will also provide a drop-off bin in the lobby for household batteries, only. The bin will be available during Library hours.
*      Please, no car batteries (these can be picked up with regular garbage).
*      These services are free and exclusively for Northbrook residents.
CFL Information:
*      CFLs are environmentally-friendly light bulbs that save energy.
*      CFLs produce the same amount of light as incandescent bulbs, have a significantly longer life and save more energy.
*      Though CFLs are more expensive than incandescent bulbs, the cost is regained in energy and replacement bulb savings.
*      There are many styles of CFLs available, including bulbs with dimming capabilities.
*      CFLs contain a trace amount of mercury in the bulbs so they need to be recycled properly.
*      It is advisable to use CFLs in places where they cannot be easily broken, such as out of the reach of children and pets.
If you have any questions, please contact Dan Kaup at 847 272-5050, ext. 4228.  For questions regarding the disposal of other items, such as household hazardous waste or medicine, please see the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency’s webpage at http://www.epa.state.il.us
Remember to recycle your household batteries and CFLs at the Village Hall and your electronics at the garage once a month. Join Northbrook, and go green!
