Information on Garbage Container Size
 Email To Friend    Print Version

Some Northbrook residents have recently received a red tag from Veolia Environmental Services on their garbage can indicating that their container was "non-compliant". The tag then explained that they must replace the container with one that is no larger than 32 gallons by November 16, or Veolia will no longer pick up the containers. The Village’s franchise agreement with Veolia stipulates that residential solid waste containers can be no larger than 32 gallons; however, Veolia has not enforced this restriction in quite some time. This restriction does not impact the waste containers many residents rent from Veolia.

This issue has come to light due to a recent increase in injuries to Veolia's employees who pick up these larger cans hundreds of times per day. While a notice went on to the website and the newsletter, the Village realizes that many residents did not receive any notification until very recently, which gave them a very short time to bring their containers into compliance. In order to provide residents with adequate time to make the necessary changes to their garbage containers, no change will be implemented until December 21, 2009.

Moving forward, The Village and Veolia have determined that residents will have three options in order to bring their cans into compliance. Residents may choose to:
1) purchase a new container that is 32 gallons or smaller in size;
2) rent a 96 gallon tote from Veolia that is attachable to the truck, or;
3) purchase a larger tote container that will attach to the garbage truck (call Veolia to check for compatibility).

We are working with retailers and informing them of Northbrook-specific regulations so that they can assist customers when purchasing their garbage cans. Below is a list of the stores that have available containers. Signage will be posted at these locations reminding customers of the size restrictions as well.
• Home Depot, 655 Lake-Cook Road in Deerfield will have 32 gallon cans by November 20
• Home Depot, 2231 Willow Road in Glenview has 32 gallon cans available as of November 16
• Do It Best, 1941 Cherry Lane, Northbrook will have cans available by November 20
• Do It Best, 3101 Dundee Road, Northbrook will have cans available by November 20
• Lowe's, 1000 Willow Road, Northbrook will have cans available by November 20

Please remember, residents have until December 21, 2009 to make the change to a compliant container. If you have any other questions, feel free to contact Dan Kaup, Assistant to the Village Manager, at 847/ 272-5050 x4228, or email him at kaup@northbrook.il.us.
