Project Description: Michaels Corporation of Brownsville, Wisconsin has been contracted by the Village to “line” a number of Village sanitary and storm sewers. Lining, also called cured in place pipe (CIPP), consists of insertion of a lining inside the old pipe. This process has been used for 30 years in Northbrook in lieu of costly, time-consuming, and disruptive excavation. Priority is given to those lines showing signs of significant deterioration and/or those which would be difficult to access to repair via standard excavation techniques.
Installation of the pipe liner is relatively unobtrusive. Normally, the only impact on the residents is the temporary sealing of service laterals that discharge into this section of sewer being lined. Just prior to the sanitary lining work, the contractor hands out notices asking residents to refrain from heavy or discretionary waste water producing activities (e.g. clothes and dish washing) for approximately 12 hours. Each section of lined sewer pipe (manhole to manhole) typically requires 24 hours or less to insert, cure and complete. The contractor will need to access manholes located in or near homes and businesses. During the work there will be several clearly marked trucks and other machinery in these neighborhoods. Public Works personnel will be monitoring the progress of the work throughout this project.
During installation of the liner you may detect a “plastic” odor in the area. This is due to the presence of a substance called styrene in the liner. A small amount of this material can be released as the liner material is cured using hot water or steam. The amounts of styrene present are very small and should dissipate within a few hours. If you notice an unusual smell in your house, or if the odor remains detectable outside for a prolonged period, please call Public Works at 847-272-4711. If you have any questions or concerns about this project, please call Gary Biederer, Sewer Supervisor at 847-509-5337 or Ken Gardner, Utilities Superintendant at 847-509-5335 in the Public Works Department.
