Public Works
Responsibilities
The Village of Northbrook's Public Works Department is responsible for public services including:
- Emergency response services
- Management of the municipal fleet vehicles
- Municipal buildings, grounds and commuter parking lots
- Operation and maintenance of the Village's water production and distribution infrastructure
- Parkways, including planting and trimming of trees
- Public streets and sidewalks
- Sanitary sewer and storm water collection/conveyance systems
- Snow and ice control
- Street lighting, signs and traffic controls

Bicycle Plan
The purpose of the Village's Bicycle Plan is to coordinate all bicycle-related initiatives within the community, to plan for improvements for access to bicycle transportation, and to make the village more bicycle-friendly.

Cemeteries
The Northbrook Public Works Department is responsible for the maintenance and operation of the North Northfield Cemetery and Northfield Union Cemetery.

Construction Projects
The Village of Northbrook strives to maintain the Village’s water, sewer, and surface infrastructure in a safe and stable condition.

Engineering Division
The Engineering Division of the Public Works Department assures that the design, construction, and maintenance of the public and private major development improvements are in conformance with the Village's Standards and Specifications for Public and Private Improvements and Floodplain Development Ordinance to maximize their safety and serviceability are maximized and minimize their long term maintenance expenses.

Flood Plain Information
If you live within Northbrook Village Limits, the Public Works Department can advise you if your property is located within a designated special flood hazard area.

Forestry Services
The core programs making up the Forestry Services group are tree trimming, removal, planting, treatment and pest removal, and resident consultation.

Flooding & Stormwater Management
Fully understand the work and efforts to maintain and operate the storm sewers and mitigate flooding.

Sidewalks & Parkways
The Village of Northbrook maintains public sidewalks, Village-owned streetlights, and directional and regulatory signage on Village roadways.

Snow & Ice Control Services
The Public Works Department is responsible for the removal of snow and ice from approximately 125 center lane miles of roadway owned by the Village of Northbrook, parking lots and adjacent walkways (excluding train platforms) at municipal buildings and commuter parking lots.

Street Maintenance
The Village is responsible for maintaining these roadways which includes such tasks as routine maintenance (i.e. pothole patching) or roadway restoration due to water main breaks. Northbrook also plans for and conducts roadway rehabilitation and reconstruction as roads reach the end of their useful life.

Utility Locating
Public Works collaborates with the Joint Utility Locating Information for Excavators (JULIE) to locate and mark Village utilities including storm and sanitary sewers, water mains, street light cabling and fiber optic cable, in advance of excavations to prevent damage to Village-owned infrastructure.
