Northbrook Fire Department Hosts Multi-Agency Hazardous Materials Drill

Northbrook News Posted on July 10, 2025 | Last Updated on July 24, 2025

The Northbrook Fire Department recently hosted a multi-jurisdictional training exercise for the Mutual Aid Box Alarm System (MABAS) Division 3 Hazardous Materials (HazMat) Response Team. This large-scale drill simulated a chemical leak in a community setting, giving first responders and partner agencies the chance to train in a realistic, high-stakes environment.

The objective of the exercise was clear: treat the situation like a real hazardous materials incident to strengthen participants’ readiness to protect lives and property during an actual emergency. After arriving on scene, team members assessed the situation and called in the HazMat Response Team.

From the initial discovery by Northbrook Park District staff to the final resolution when HazMat technicians successfully isolated and controlled the simulated leak, the drill tested every step of the emergency response process. A smoke-making device was used to realistically simulate the chemical leak, creating a challenging environment for first responders. Crews then made entry wearing full hazmat gear to analyze the situation, identify the source, and work to stop the leak safely.

The Northbrook Police Communications team, R.E.D. Center Dispatch, Northbrook Fire, and MABAS Division 3 worked together to ensure public safety, share critical updates, and contain the simulated hazard. Afterward, crews proceeded to the decontamination area for processing.

Hazardous materials incidents are the 3rd leading cause of fire department call-outs nationwide, underscoring the importance of continuous training. Whether responding to minor events or large-scale emergencies, the Northbrook Fire Department remains steadfast in its mission to protect life and property and maintain a safe community for all.

“Simulated drills like this multi-agency exercise are critical to our preparedness,” said Fire Chief Dave Schweihs. “They allow us to refine our procedures, strengthen our coordination with partner agencies, and ensure we’re ready for any situation.”

The Northbrook Fire Department extends its gratitude to all participating agencies and personnel for their commitment to public safety and their ongoing partnership in keeping the community safe.
