(Updated 9.25.25)
The Village of Northbrook is upgrading its water system with advanced meter infrastructure that will track daily water usage, reduce water loss and surprise bills, and send water-saving tips. With this remote access, residents and businesses can spot leaks sooner and adjust their usage to be more sustainable.
WaterSmart Portal & Leak Alerts
Beginning October 1, 2025, the Village’s new WaterSmart portal will go live. This system will allow residents to:
- View water usage online in near real time
- Receive automatic leak alerts
- Customize how alerts are shared
You can register in advance at northbrookil.watersmart.com. You will need your utility billing account number and zip code to create your account.
What to Expect When the Portal Goes Live
- Residents with contact information on file will automatically begin receiving leak alerts by email whether or not you are registered for the system.
- Residential customers may receive an alert if usage is at least 2 gallons per hour for 12 hours in a row.
- A “burst alarm” will be triggered if usage reaches 75 gallons per hour for 6 consecutive hours.
- Commercial, schools, and other large users will receive alerts if usage is at least 10 gallons per hour for 48 consecutive hours.
Register Your Account
- Step 1 – visit northbrookil.watersmart.com.
- Step 2 – Register using your account number listed on your water bill as your registration code.
- Step 3 – Answer simple survey questions to customize your user experience and get accurate comparisons to similar households.
Managing Alerts
- Register in the WaterSmart portal to update how you receive alerts, including signing up for text messages or creating a high-bill alert.
- Look for alerts directly from the Village system. They are not spam and will never ask for payment or personal information.
- Opt out of alerts anytime thorough the portal settings once you have created your account in WaterSmart.
“Our history of innovation when it comes to how we manage our water is filled with innovation and continuous improvement,” said Village of Northbrook President, Kathryn Celisa. “This new system builds on that commitment by giving residents the tools to better understand their water use, prevent costly leaks, and support a more sustainable future for our community.”
The Village looks forward to bringing this new technology online and helping residents get the most out of it. Residents are encouraged to register for the WaterSmart Portal before October 1 to ensure a smooth transition when leak alerts begin. Visit northbrookil.watersmart.com to get started.
