Northbrook and Glenview Firefighters Sharpen Skills that Keep us Safe at NIPSTA Training

Northbrook News Posted on October 02, 2025

Firefighters from Northbrook and Glenview spent three days at the Northeastern Illinois Public Safety Training Academy (NIPSTA) starting September 30, participating in hands-on fire training designed to keep the community safe. The exercises tested their skills, teamwork, and readiness in high-pressure scenarios that mirror real-life emergencies.

During training, crews faced multiple residential fire simulations, including a second-floor bedroom fire, a first-floor blaze, and a basement fire. Firefighters practiced essential tactics such as search and rescue, victim removal, hose line advancement, forcible entry, and timely ventilation. Tools such as thermal imaging cameras (TIC) were used to locate test victims and fire sources, while command and company officers applied the Incident Command System to manage each scene. These drills tested their coordination, decision-making, and physical endurance, mirroring the challenges of real-life emergencies.

The first-floor fire scenario included an added challenge: a non-functioning fire hydrant. Firefighters had to implement relay pumping, coordinating crews and engines to maintain water supply. These obstacles mimic real-life complications that crews must be prepared to handle.

Northbrook Deputy Fire Chief of Operations Matt Vanderweel emphasized that training is crucial not just for teamwork, but for safety.

“It’s essential that firefighters understand how to protect themselves as well as the people they’re rescuing,” Deputy Chief Vanderweel said. “In a real fire, situations can change instantly. We train to respond safely when victims are at risk and when firefighters might be at risk too.”

The three-day program strengthened both interdepartmental coordination and individual readiness. Working alongside Glenview Fire Department crews, Northbrook firefighters shared strategies, honed their techniques, and reinforced communication while adapting to unique challenges. Each simulation introduced obstacles that required quick thinking and flexibility.

Hands-on exercises like these highlight the skill, courage, and preparation required to fight fires effectively. From advanced tactics to life-saving maneuvers, the training ensures firefighters are ready to respond to emergencies day or night in the community.
