Information on Recycling Bicycles: Working Bikes, a non-profit based in Chicago, accepts bicycle donations. Once they receive a donation, they refurbish it and ship it to a community in need. Bikes can be brought to their Chicago location, their Waukegan drop site (George Garner Cyclery, 1111 Waukegan Road in Northbrook) or to one of their regional collection events, including Northbrook's annual Earth Day Recycling Event.
Information on Recycling Books & Magazines: Softcover books and magazines can be recycled in your recycling bin. Hard covers can be difficult to recycle - consider donating instead. The Friends of the Northbrook Public Library accepts such donations.
Information on Recycling Large Appliances: If a single household item is too large to fit in a cart, then it is considered a bulk item. LRS will accept one bulk item each week at no additional charge. Additional items will incur a fee. Please place the bulk item(s) next to your refuse cart on your regularly scheduled collection day. Information on Recycling Christmas Trees: During the month of January, recycle your organic holiday tree, wreaths, and garland by placing it at the curb on your recycling day. Remove all lights, garland, and decorations, and make sure your tree is easily accessible at the curb.
Please note that dried-out trees are a fire danger and should not be left in your home or garage or be placed outside against your home.
Information on Recycling Fire Extinguishers: Accepted at the Fleet Garage behind Village Hall (1227 Cedar) on the first Tuesday and Saturday of each month. Tuesday hours are 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday hours are 9 a.m. to noon. Please note: Electronics cannot be disposed of in your regular trash or recycling.
Information on Honorable Disposal for Flags: A dropoff receptacle for honorable disposal of flags is available 24/7, located at the front entrance of Village Hall (1225 Cedar Lane). As well, Northfield Township accepts flags for disposal at 237 Melvin Dr. See

Information on Composting: LRS will collect all yard waste and food scraps for composting as part of its curbside program on Wednesdays. Residents can either subscribe to the program or purchase stickers for one-time pickups. See

Information on Recycling Holiday Lights: From December 1-January 29, holiday lights can be dropped off in the marked bin located at the Village Hall on weekdays from 8:30am - 4:30pm. Holiday lights cannot be disposed of in your regular trash or recycling.
