Northbrook Invites Residents to Join the Plastic Free July Challenge

Northbrook News Posted on July 03, 2025

This July, the Village of Northbrook invites residents to be part of a global effort to reduce single-use plastics and make a lasting impact on our environment. Plastic Free July is more than just a challenge, it’s a movement that began in 2011 with 40 people in Western Australia and has since grown into a worldwide initiative. By 2024, more than 174 million participants across 190 countries took part, helping to divert hundreds of millions of pounds of plastic waste from landfills and waterways.

The premise is simple but powerful: for the month of July, participants pledge to avoid single-use plastic items like bags, bottles, cups, straws, and food wrap. Even small changes made by individuals add up to a significant collective impact. Beyond households, thousands of businesses and organizations worldwide are also participating, redesigning products, shifting to sustainable packaging, and transforming supply chains to reduce plastic waste.

In Northbrook, we’re proud of our community’s commitment to environmental sustainability. Joining Plastic Free July is a meaningful way for individuals and families to contribute to a healthier planet and set an example for future generations.

Why Focus on Single-Use Plastics?
Single-use plastics—like grocery bags, water bottles, coffee cups, and cling wrap—are designed to be used once and discarded. Unfortunately, they often end up in landfills, waterways, and oceans, where they can take hundreds of years to break down. These plastics also pose risks to wildlife and contribute to the growing problem of microplastics in our environment.

Simple Ways to Get Started
Taking part in Plastic Free July doesn’t require a complete lifestyle overhaul. Start small with these steps:

  • Bring a reusable cup or mug when getting coffee or other drinks on the go.

  • Carry a refillable water bottle instead of buying bottled water.

  • Replace plastic food wrap with beeswax wraps or reusable containers.

  • Keep reusable shopping bags in your car or by your door to avoid plastic bags.

  • Say no to plastic straws and utensils when ordering takeout.

Every choice helps reduce demand for single-use plastics and prevents more waste from entering our landfills and waterways.

Make the Pledge
Community members are encouraged to take the pledge at www.plasticfreejuly.org and explore resources, tips, and success stories from around the world. By joining millions of others, Northbrook residents can help create a cleaner, healthier environment—one choice at a time.

Together, we can make a difference this July and beyond.
