An Unlocked Car Is an Open Invitation

Northbrook News Posted on January 06, 2026

Vehicle burglaries and thefts are often crimes of opportunity. In many cases, offenders are not breaking windows or forcing entry. They are simply trying door handles and taking advantage of unlocked vehicles, keys left inside, or valuables left in plain sight.

While Northbrook remains a safe community, recent incidents serve as an important reminder that crime prevention starts with everyday habits. A few extra moments of precaution can make a significant difference and help protect not only your property, but your neighbors as well.

The Northbrook Police Department encourages residents to use the following routine precautions:

  • Always lock your vehicle, even when parked at home or stored inside your garage.
  • Never leave keys or key fobs inside your car, including in cup holders, center consoles, or glove compartments.
  • Remove valuables from view, such as purses, wallets, electronics, or bags even if the vehicle is locked.

Crimes of opportunity are preventable. By staying alert and taking small, consistent precautions, residents can help reduce opportunities for theft and keep Northbrook safe for everyone.

For more information or to schedule a free home safety check, residents are encouraged to contact the Northbrook Police Department’s non-emergency line at 847-564-2060.
