Water is at the heart of every thriving community, and here in Northbrook, our story is one of bold vision, innovation, and long-term stewardship. Over 50 years ago, Northbrook leaders made the remarkable decision to build a dedicated pipeline to bring fresh water directly from Lake Michigan to local homes and businesses. Today, Northbrook remains the only inland suburb in the Chicago area to draw water straight from the lake—a distinction that reflects our enduring commitment to smart, forward-thinking solutions.
Now, the Village is writing the next chapter in that legacy with smart water meter technology. Watch this video and see the information below to learn about this important effort.
This spring, Northbrook is launching a community-wide upgrade to our water system through the installation of new, state-of-the-art water meters. In partnership with water solutions firm Veregy, these smart meters will feature Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI)—technology that enables real-time, remote water usage readings.
This system will give residents and businesses the tools to track water use, detect leaks faster, and reduce waste, all while promoting long-term sustainability. Together, we're honoring our past while planning for a more sustainable, connected future. Learn more about the project at northbrook.il.us/AMI
