Municipal Facilities & Commuter Lots
Responsibilities
The Village of Northbrook’s Public Works Department is responsible for plowing and salting of commuter parking lots, parking lots at municipal facilities and sidewalks adjacent to these facilities. Plowing and salting operations for these facilities are conducted with Village personnel and equipment and are performed concurrently with other snow and ice control operations.
Parking lots are salted using a 5-ton dump trucks equipped with a salt spreader and a blended liquid deicer tank. Parking lots are plowed using Village end loaders equipped with plow blades or snow pusher attachment. Sidewalks that are adjacent to Village facilities or the train station are shoveled and salted with a skid steer loader or by hand.
Program Service Level
Parking lots at municipal facilities are salted and plowed in conjunction with neighborhood plowing and salting routes. Lots are salted with the Village's 5-ton dump trucks after main Village-owned arterial and collector roadways have been salted. Parking lots are plowed after snow accumulation reaches 1.5 to 2 inches and generally after Village-owned arterial and collector roadways have been plowed. Sidewalks are shoveled and salted multiple times throughout storms to ensure they are safe for pedestrians. To the greatest extent possible, commuter parking lots are plowed and salted prior to 5 a.m. on business days when commuters begin to arrive.
Industry/Village Standard
The Public Works Department begins salting operations as road conditions dictate and begins plowing when snow accumulation reaches 1.5 to 2 inches. It is the Village's goal to have parking lots plowed and salted prior to 5 a.m.
